Criminality in heroin addicts before, during, and after methadone treatment

Abstract

A study of criminal activity of heroin addicts enrolled in the methadone treatment program in Atlanta, Georgia is presented. 118 heroin addicts with criminal records in a methadone maintenance and detoxification program were studied. Comparison of the preaddiction and postaddiction criminal rates showed no changes for thefts or violent crimes. In comparing the year prior to treatment versus the time while in the treatment, no changes in rates of arrests or convictions were found.
