Abstract

Approximately 70,000 general service patients receive postpartum and preabortal counseling on contraceptive methods each year in 30 voluntary and municipal hospitals in New York City. A survey in 1971 showed that the younger the patient, the less likely she has used contraception in the 2 years prior to pregnancy. Also, patients terminating their 1st pregnancy by birth or abortion are the least likely to have used any contraception in the last 2 years. 41% of all abortion patients said they had not used any contraceptive method in the past 2 years. 91% of those under age 15 and 66% of those ages 15-19 had not used any contraception in the last 2 years. Over 90% of all patients receiving the counseling asked to be put on a contraceptive method.
