Smoking in the workplace: A hazard ignored

Abstract

The data on the health effects of smoking, particularly in the occupational setting, are valid, reliable and voluminous. The predictable beneficial impact if smoking is controlled is clear. Until smoking control is effectively incorporated into workplace standards, the opportunity for a substantial beneficial impact on morbidity and mortality will be missed. By continuing to ignore smoking in the workplace, OSHA, labor, and management will continue to condone an occupational hazard.
