Economic Constitution of Turkey and Three Major Topics

The most important civil constitution creating process since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey is still ongoing. Economic and financial provisions of our 1982 constitution are not one; in fact they are all over the place. There is an “Economic and Financial Provision” heading under the constitution; however, it is extremely inadequate. The 1982 Constitution is not a constitution in which financial and economic provisions are listed under one section. There has never been an interest to create an Economic Constitution in Turkey until today. The same can be said for the European Union in the past. It is extremely important to set binding provisions for the economy under constitutions, especially in a world that is becoming global and where economic crisis is a major issue, as it has become a familiar scene that democratic governments tend to oversee economic rules. In the event that governments are majority voters in the legislative organ, it is easy to oversee such rules. If the basic principles required for a well-operated economy are incorporated into the constitution, nobody can step outside the set rules. Ensuring transparency for economic and financial issues, being able to monitor economic management, and making it accountable is extremely important for preventing fraud in the economy as well as helping democracy settle in.
