Abstract

This article seeks to quantify the effects of the industrial structure and regional competitiveness on the recovery of formal private employment in 85 Argentinean labor market areas (LMAs) after two crises of different nature (2001-2002 and 2009). Using the shift-share analysis, the change in employment in LMAs is decomposed into three components: national, industrial, and regional. In both periods, regional competitiveness is more important than industrial composition in explaining the resilience of LMAs. Additionally, the role of the type of productive specialization and different factors associated with regional competitiveness are analyzed.
