Formation of Human Capital in Knowledge Intensive Service Activities

Abstract

Using data from PISA 2012, this paper analyzes the characteristics of Argentine a students aged 15 years old who plan to follow a math career. Firstly individual, household, school and context characteristics of students planning to follow a math career are compared against the rest of the students by country. Then, a binary choice model is estimated to detect the factors associated with the probability of having a future aspiration in such careers. The results show that men and students who attend public schools have a lower probability of developing an interest in the pursuit of a math career; whereas students with high intrinsic and instrumental motivation to learn mathematics and a high self-concept in that area have a higher probability of pursuing a math career. Additionally, math related anxiety has a negative relationship with the probability of pursuing those careers.
