A multidimensional analysis of poverty: recent evidence for the regions of Argentina

Abstract

The traditional poverty approach explains poverty levels but partially; there are deficiencies additional to income. In this paper we characterize multidimensional poverty in Argentinean regions for the period 2004-2010. Based on the Capability Approach we estimate indicators for each dimension considered, assigning weights, and aggregate them through the main index of multidimensional poverty, making a comparative analysis. The higher multidimensional poverty levels are recorded in the NOA and NEA and lower in the Patagonia, and have been reduced in all the regions. Income, Rate of Dependence and Sanitation are the most relevant indicators to explain poverty.
