La talla de los europeos, 1700-2000: ciclos, crecimiento y desigualdad

Abstract

Este artículo explora los cambios seculares producidos en el bienestar biológico de los europeos y las relaciones que se establecen entre el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo humano. Con datos de talla masculina del reclutamiento militar y distintas encuestas nacionales sobre la salud y Paneles de la Comunidad Europea, reconstruye la tendencia de las estaturas en los tres últimos siglos. Los resultados muestran, de un lado, el fuerte crecimiento de la estatura de las poblaciones europeas desde mediados del siglo xix , tras un periodo de deterioro con desigual intensidad entre 1750 y 1850, y de otro, la persistencia de disparidades territoriales de las estaturas desde el siglo xviii . Demuestra que la desigualdad observada en el largo plazo estuvo asociada principalmente a factores ambientales y socioeconómicos. Concluye que el fabuloso incremento de la estatura fue una auténtica revolución fisiológica vinculada a los procesos de crecimiento económico, la industrialización y la urbanización, pero sobre todo a las mejoras de la nutrición, la renta, la salud pública y la educación.
