Abstract

Population’s size is a key factor in any social sciences quantitative analysis. This work examines all existing annual population series for Spain’s modern history and notes their lack of homogeneity, whether from a conceptual, territorial or methodological point of view. In order to fill this void, a new time series covering from 1850 to 2001 is produced, meeting the necessary consistence and homogeneity requirements through the elaboration of annual demographic balances. The work describes the historic profile of the new series and identifies and analyzes its most relevant changes. KEY Classification-JEL: J11, N01, N33, N34
