Poverty Among Children and Elderly

Abstract

The Nation's overall poverty rate increased from 12.1 percent in 1969 to 15.2 percent in 1983. In nonmetropolitan areas, poverty rates were 17 percent in both 1969 and 1983. Underlying poverty rates for children and elderly changed markedly, however. Poverty among the elderly decreased, especially in nonmetro areas, while poverty among children rose.
