U.S. Population Trends Break with Past

Abstract

Sharp swings in U.S. population trends after 1970 kept the experts guessing and planners scrambling. Strong rural growth, lower birth rates, smaller households, and population shifts all were either unexpected or greater than predicted. Here is a brief explanation of what happened and why.
