Abstract

It is undertaken a long-run comparative analysis of agricultural models in Spanish mountain areas. Some considerations about current debates on economic and territorial mountain policies are also included. It is presented a statistical reconstruction of agricultural soil-use patterns in 84 main montainous counties. For the discussion on public policies, it is also considered the effect of depopulation on the composition of employment in mountain economies. The central conclusion is that ecological mountain diversity has led to parallel diversity in agricultural models, so that new approaches to institutional action should be aware of that diversity and also consider that depopulation has removed primary sector out of its traditional position as main employer.
