Abstract
The European Swordfish Fleet (North Atlantic) has showed a great growth in the last ten years, and since this fleet harvests the majority of catches, it is a principal producer in the fishery, followed by USA, Canada and Japan. The aim of this paper is to show and to analyse the three conditions that affect to the fishery activity: biological, of management and economic factors. First section presents biological situation of this marine resource (very worrying for early 1990s), the necessity to international management, and the European regulation. Second section includes the technical characteristics of this fleet (Spanish and Portuguese vessels basically), some figures about fishing effort and the landings in the fishery for the last fifteen years. Finally, the economic profitability of this fleet is analysed.
