Una aproximación a la Encefalopatía Espongiforme bovina y a sus consecuencias

Abstract

Tras el anuncio realizado por las autoridades británicas en 1996 de una posible conexión entre el «mal de las vacas locas» y la enfermedad humana variante de Creutzfeld-Jakob (vCJ), se generó una crisis en el sector ganadero europeo que obligó a tomar una serie de medidas destinadas a paliar los efectos de esta. El objetivo de este artículo es doble: por un lado, hacer una breve revisión de la historia y circunstancias de la enfermedad animal, sus orígenes y conexiones con la salud humana. Por otro, revisar las medidas tomadas en la Unión Europea y sus miembros, analizando las posibles consecuencias económicas de esta situación...In 1996, British authorities announced a possible relationship between “mad-cow disease” and a human disease, variant of Creutzfeld-Jakob (vCJ). This resulted in a deep crisis in the European livestock sector, which obliged the European Union and its members to adopted several important measures. The aim of this article is twofold: first, make a short revision of the history and circumstances of the animal disease, its origins and connections with the human health. Second, analysed the measures and its possible economic consequences.
