Abstract
The sheep sector in Aragón can be characterized as a dual system. Together with traditional familiar businesses with a low rate of out-of-farm employment, an old infrastructure and a low level of investments, there have appeared in recent years a new dynamic sector characterized by larger sizes, more modern infrastructure, technological investments and the use of out-of-farm employment. The current crisis the sector is suffering together with the recent reform of the CMO have generated a high degree of uncertainty among sheep farmers about the future. The aim of this study is, precisely, to analyse the future expectations of sheep producers. From a survey carried out among a sample of sheep farmers producers representing the most important production systems within the region, this paper sociodemographically characterises the owner of the farms and establishes a ranking of their possible business and personal/familiar goals. Finally, future expectations are analysed and a logit model is specified to determine main factors for future survival.
