The public bodies responsible for both tourism and rural development consider this type of tourism as an opportunity to diversify the Spanish tourist market, as well as a boost to the economic development of many areas in the Spanish interior. Among the diverse types of tourist accomodation, rural houses have always been considered as specially related to the development of the interior aimed at by many rural development policies, as it helps to keep the population in the countryside and is an aid to recovering and preserving the cultural heritage. To achieve the maximum commercial benefit from this holiday accomodation, it is fundamental to know the market perfectly. The main objective of this study is therefore to examine and quantify recent developments in the principal elements of the Spanish demand for tourism in rural houses. This main objective can be further subdivided into two specific objectives: firstly, to describe the recent evolution in the volume of tourism in rural houses by Spanish holidaymakers (figured for journeys, travellers and nights spent in accomodation); and secondly, to describe the evolution of the main elements of rural holidays by Spanish tourists (destination, duration, motivation, degree of satisfaction, etc). The study was carried out by means of a specific examination of the statistics for tourist movements by the Spanish population, compiled by the Economics Ministry through the Instituto de Estudios Turisticos. The results obtained throw new light on the recent evolution of tourism in rural houses and on the degree of satisfaction of Spanish clients.
