Abstract

This investigation deals with the changes and the evolution have taken place in this sector after joining the European Union, and its aim is to outline the possible stages the tomato could face in a very near future. The comparative advantages in the tomato from the Canaries (quality, better infrastructures, climate) are not optimised with its near competitors, particularly Morocco. The need to overcome the important debt in the sector (due to investment in infrastructures) and its deficit (because of competitiveness in the market) make the perspectives to be very difficult; but the definite integration in the community markets, the increase of structural funds (and its better management), and, finally, an adequate protectionist politics from the Politic Agriculture Community (PAC), can be a good instrument to abort any competence based on social dumping.
