Small-scale production is threatened by the low profitability in which it operates, and the elements involved in it are unknown, therefore, the objective is to identify the factor that define the profitability of small. Scale cattle production units in the North Central Region of state of Michoacán. We worked with 15-unit production in three municipalities. Technical and economic indicators were determined from the 12-month record. To find out the expectations and preferences of market, a survey was conducted. A correlation analysis was performed to determine the factors influencing profitability from Return on Assets. The factors that have greatest impact are those related to market, where the producer selects because of the ease of sale of the product and tradition, even if receives o lower Price. The market negatively affects the cost per kg of meat and the profits of meat and milk. The ease or difficulty of selling milk affects the levels of meat and milk production, which in turn is mainly related to fixed assets and to a lesser extent to current assets. To improve production, milk production must be improved through the implementation of livestock technologies.
