Abstract

The article presents the results of research on the spatial appearance of villages with chain layouts in the former Duchy of Muszyna. The reason for taking up the subject was the desire to show what the spatial layouts of villages in the Duchy of Muszyna once looked like. This issue is important for regionalists and historians involved in research on this region. The research conducted may also be useful for conservation services, officials, planners and all those interested in rural settlement. The aim of the work was to identify chain villages in the Duchy of Muszyna and their characteristics in terms of the shape of the site and the tracts as well as the distribution of sacral objects. The analysis covered all the villages located in this region. In the course of the analysis, certain characteristic features of the studied chain layouts were demonstrated, as all of them were characterized by a site marked out in a way that was built up on one or both sides. The tracts took the form of compact complexes with the dominance of long-narrow-band plot complexes. The study also indicated the spatial regularities of the location of the church or Orthodox church in the chains: in the middle of the village by the main road at the border of the settlement, in the middle of the village, at a further distance from the road (behind the buildings) or within the embankments. The cemetery was located by the church or Orthodox church or within the village embankments (behind the settlement).
