Abstract

The aim of this article is to outline the social history of the development of rural consumer cooperatives in Poland in the years 1900–1939. The author presents arguments in support of the thesis that consumer cooperatives were relatively weak economically compared to other branches of rural cooperatives, but played an important role in building the rural public sphere, which in turn contributed to the growing importance of the people's movement. The importance of rural consumer cooperatives was forgotten, however, mainly due to the post-war transformations that led to the liquidation of these institutions and thus – the social movement.
