Activities Undertaken By Higher Education Institutions To Develop Tourism And Cultural Offer In Academic Cities – A Case Study Of Krakow

Abstract

Subject and purpose of work: The contemporary role that higher education institutions play is not limited to educational and scientific research activity. It involves also creating local tourism cultural offer and an offer of spending leisure time for inhabitants and visitors. Therefore the purpose of the article is to describe the activities undertaken by higher education institutions using the example of Krakow. Materials and methods: On the basis of the study of source materials it was possible to identify types of enterprise undertaken by higher education institutions, also those involved in cooperation, whose activity depends on academic traditions and potential. Results : As the example of Krakow shows, higher education institutions affect the development of incoming tourism in the three main areas: educational tourism, cultural tourism, and business tourism and MICE industry. They also broaden the offer of spending leisure time in the city directed to the inhabitants, students and tourists. Conclusions : Academic potential influences the function and image of the city in the national and international arena. Thus it seems necessary to include higher education institutions in the development of a local tourism offer and cultural animation of the city life.------Przedmiot i cel pracy: Rola, jaką odgrywają współczesne uczelnie wyższe nie ogranicza się jedynie do prowadzenia działalności edukacyjnej i naukowo-badawczej. Polega ona również na tworzeniu lokalnej oferty turystyczno-kulturalnej oraz spędzania czasu wolnego dla mieszkańców i przyjezdnych. Dlatego też celem artykułu jest omówienie działań podejmowanych przez uczelnie wyższe w tym zakresie na przykładzie Krakowa. Materiały i metody: Na podstawie kwerendy materiałów źródłowych zidentyfikowano rodzaje przedsięwzięć realizowanych przez uczelnie wyższe, również we współpracy z innymi podmiotami, dla których podstawą są tradycje i potencjał akademicki. Wyniki : Jak pokazuje przykład Krakowa, uczelnie wyższe oddziałują na rozwój turystyki przyjazdowej w trzech głównych obszarach: turystyki edukacyjnej, turystyki kulturowej oraz turystyki biznesowej i przemysłu spotkań. Rozszerzają one również ofertę spędzania czasu wolnego w mieście skierowaną do mieszkańców, studentów i turystów. Wnioski : Potencjał akademicki wpływa na funkcje i wizerunek miasta na arenie krajowej i międzynarodowej. Z tego powodu konieczne wydaje się włączanie uczelni wyższych w rozwój lokalnej oferty turystycznej i animację życia kulturalnego miasta.
