Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis related with the increase of market power of a large beef packing industry in the state of Mato Grosso, resulting from the merge of this company with another, and from the renting of slaughterhouses from a third. Due to events occurred in the year of 2009; cattle-breeders of the State exposed the hypothesis related with the loss of bargaining power. This phenomenon was widely spread about in the press. The testing of this hypothesis was based on the comparison of relative prices charged in the State before and after the occurrence of those events. Besides, relative amounts of production were also compared. Data analysis consisted of t test, for the equality of means, and Analysis of Variance. Evidences show that the bargaining power of suppliers was preserved, considering that averages of relative prices charged in the market cannot be considered statistically different. In addition, the production recorded in Mato Grosso increased when compared to that obtained in the whole country
