Abstract

----- Future activities on farms pass through succession. However, the lack of structure, access difficulties to policies related to family farming, financing difficulties, and poor growers schooling, are factors which contribute to the departure of young people from the countryside to the city, looking for work opportunities and making the succession difficult. The purpose of this study was to analyse the succession at the Capão Bonito I settlement in Sidrolândia, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. We used the econometric model of qualitative choice called Multinomial Logit to interview 45 settled people from the month of August to September 2012. The following settlement parameters were estimated: patrimony transfer, duration of the settlement process, financing, land strip possession, and the settled income. The hypotheses of that the succession process becomes worse as low is the farming yield, and of that the choose of succession is greater as longer is the staying time in the countryside, were confirmed. However, the hypothesis of that the succession choosing is lesser as greater is the schooling level was rejected. Therefore, the main limitations are the settled fear in collaborating in the research, as well as structural concerns of the settlement process.
