Expansão Canavieira No Cerrado Goiano: Crescimento Econômico É Desenvolvimento?1

Abstract

Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, analisar os impactos da expansão da cana, no Vale do São Patrício – região localizada no Centro-Norte do estado de Goiás. Principal área goiana produtora de cana-de-açúcar destinada à produção de álcool combustível, o Vale do São Patrício apresenta transformações em aspectos diversos, como na configuração ambiental, na dinâmica econômica e na estrutura do tecido social. O estudo foi realizado a partir da reunião de entrevista e observações in loco com a análise de dados secundários para os 22 municípios que formam o Vale. Dentre os resultados obtidos, está a constatação de que 70% da área de culturas temporárias estão ocupadas pela cana-de-açúcar, a qual domina as paisagens e provoca um processo de êxodo rural. Os dados indicam ainda que, apesar do crescimento econômico verificado nos últimos anos, a riqueza gerada não tem resultado em benefícios para a população rural.
