Bioma Pampa: una historia de sinergias entre pastizales, ganado y humanos

Abstract

En agosto de 2022 realizamos una ponencia en el congreso anual de la Asociación de Economía Agrícola y Aplicada (AA EA) en Estados Unidos bajo el título “Pasado, presente y desafíos futuros de la producción de carne vacuna en los pastizales del Río de la Plata”. La relativa estabilidad mostrada en el largo plazo por el stock ganadero en la región nos plantea una hipótesis de equilibrio en el flujo neto de metano. Simultáneamente a la emisión de una ierta cantidad de metano por parte del ganado, otra cantidad se está transformando en CO2. El CH4 emitido no proviene de fuentes fósiles sino del CO2 ya presente en la atmósfera. Es parte del ciclo de carbono biogénico capturado por las plantas y consumido luego por los rumiantes. Si esta hipótesis se verifica, la ganadería de los pastizales del Río de la Plata probaría su inocencia frente a las acusaciones de contribuir a la destrucción del planeta.
