Abstract

This study analyzes the geographicalm location of specialized tehcnological affiliates and their relative importance in the structure of large agro-industrial multinationals. These laboratories have an independent status within the firm; they play a significant role in the coordination of the firm R-D activities and in the development of generic technology which may be used in various trades. The study also analyzes the technological exchanges taking place between these large firmes and their « filière ». Attention is also devoted to the internationalization of R-D in agro-industries. Europe, and especially France, has benefited from this process. These countries are becoming hosts to international laboratories working in fields such as R-D in protein, biotechnology and engineering. By contrast, with the exception ofbritish multinationals, these types of laboratories are relativeley less important in the structure of Japanese multinationals.
