Abstract

Against a background of saturated agricultural markets, farmers are adapting their systems of production. Within the context of Common Agricultural Policy reform, we examine here some types of structural adaptation which have repercussions on land use : (I) extensification of livestock systems, (II) diversification from farming towards agro-tourism, (III) the processing of farm produce and direct sale to consumers, and (IV) enhancement of the production of local produce on a collective basis. To make a proper assessment of the prospects for such adaptations, we need to consider not only the questions they raise from the standpoint of the way farms are operated, but also the position of other agents in terms of supply, and changes in demand in the sectors of activity concerned.
