Approche économique de l'intensification

Author

Listed:
  • Bonnieux, François

Abstract

An economic appraisal of agricultural intensification - In the first part of this paper, the author seeks to provide a theoretical framework to analyse agricultural intensification. He gives special emphasis to the influence of factor prices and technical progress on factor-use proportions. The induced innovation hypothesis is also presented. The second and third parts are based upon French regional data concerning the sixties and seventies. Despite large differences in factor endowment ratios, regions experienced the same growth pattern. It is characterized by the substitution of materials, capital, and land to labor. The rate of growth of total productivity has been very different among regions, for example cropping regions (specially cereals oriented) were more successful than dairy regions and mediterranean areas.
