Abstract

The features of the food processing equipment (FPE) industry are shaped both by the forward linkage with the food industry and the lateral connection with the equipment goods industries. - At the beginning the production of FPE is narrowly dependent upon the demand for traditional equipments in the food industry. This exclusive relationship tends to limit the scope for both technical and sectoral development in the engineering industry where the firms are highly specialized. - Recently the move towards deeper industrialization in some sectors of the food industry creates a new demand for FPE of higher technological degree with a twofold consequence : - it stimulates the inter-sectoral transfer of technologies and equipments, it leads to the strenthening of the relationship between the FPE manufacturers and other specialized equipment. In the case of France the restructuring and the new connections of the FPE manufacturers took place recently. They give a strong impetus to the traditionnal sector of small firms towards international competition, and technological progress.
