Abstract

In this short paper we shall only mention certain problems concerning: — on the one hand the marginal rural zones in developing countries in the « Mediterranean ecological zone », particularly those where farm production can never be counted on because of the prevalent risks of drought (arid and semi- arid zones) ; — on the other hand the marginal rural zones in the developed countries in the « Mediterranean ecological zone », particularly those situated in zones where the annual rainfall is high (sub-humid and humid zones) which in the past (2 to 4 thousand years) were exploited for agricultural, sylvicultural and pastoral purposes but which have been abandoned for some decades (or are gradually being abandoned). It should be noted that the areas covered by these two categories of marginal rural zones extend respectively to about 200 millions and 100 millions hectares, which means that the subject may concern several scores of millions of inhabitants of whom, on average for both types of zone, 40 % to 50% are still rural producers.
