Abstract

In this department in Brittany, farm extension groups have been, since the fifties, one of the most efficient agents of change. In their early stages, the extension services were controled by the administration and by the traditional farmers' unions. Later, in a powerful social movement, the middle segments of agriculture, assumed control of the diffusion of innovations thus expressing their aspiration towards different ways of producing and living. The story of extension in Morbihan is thus the story of the emergence of this rising generation which, in a rapidly changing economic environment and in a rural society experiencing deep changes, will express its goals in specific extension programmes and institutions ; it will even take over the farmers' organizations and change the course of the evolutions.
