Vulgarisation et développement, réexamen de la problématique

Abstract

Introductory paper to the session. Rather than arguing on definitions, it is essential to note that extension work is a part of agricultural policy and depends on the global situation of agriculture. Since the latter has changed, reappraisal of extension is needed. A rather critical evaluation is presented : inadequate coordination, complex financing channels, poor links with teaching activities. Farmers' needs, their decision making processes, dynamics of local groups must be better taken into account for a new start.
