Africa becoming younger: A disguised curse by demographics?

Abstract

The world’s population reached a milestone of 8 billion a couple of years ago. Below this headline figure, however, lies interesting undercurrents as the global human population undergoes dramatic shifts. In fact, it is estimated that economies that account for two-thirds of the global population face the prospect of declining populations over time. Why? Because as fertility rates in countries such as Germany and Japan run short of the replacement fertility level of 2.1 children per woman, their populations will shrink due to aging and mortality.
