Lessons from the mystery of capital: formal property rights as a pathway towards intergenerational wealth and economic inclusion in emerging economies

Abstract

The existence of formal property rights provides the catalyst for countries to become producers of capital at scale. Emerging economies benefit from vast reservoirs of informally held property that could be used to produce capital at scale if only they can be formalized. In order to do so there needs to be a shared understanding of how to convert informal capital into formal capital. This article highlights key points from Hernando de Soto’s seminal work on the subject as a contribution towards such an understanding.
