The industrial journey of AfCFTA and the elephants (large and small) in the room

Abstract

On paper, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is one of the most ambitious development projects in Africa’s history which is aimed at transforming the continent’s economic landscape towards a path to sustainable industrialisation. If, successfully implemented, it will create one of the largest single markets, for goods and services, in the world with the potential to even dwarf the European single market. However, like NEPAD, the elephants in the room, big and small, have the potential to derail this critical development project.
