The political economy of the Ghana cedi performance: A community level explanation

Abstract

Ghana is a peaceful country, the second top producer of global cocoa, the second top producer of gold in Africa, and oil and gas producer. However, her economy has been under immerse pressure with inflation galloping to a record high in decades. Since January 2022, her currency (GHS) has depreciated very drastically against other currencies. It has depreciated by about 57 percent against the US$, and it has been classified as the 2022 worst performing currency in the world. Some members of my local community have asked me severally about the underlying causes of the GHS drastic depreciation. I have taken time to simplify the explanations to some of them. This article will use a community example to simplify the explanations so that persons without finance background especially the ordinary person will appreciate them.
