Cross-border digital data flows and MSME access to finance in context of AfCFTA

Abstract

The Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement was heralded as a game changer of the decade in that it created the largest free trade area in the world by the number of countries, connecting 1.3 billion people across 55 countries with a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of US$3.4 trillion. For the first time, African countries had a platform where they could collectively (as a continent) participate and compete in the global economy, potentially redressing the effects of decades of uneven trade negotiations. Existentially, AfCFTA offers an opportunity for intra-continental trade providing economies with an opportunity to diversify their exports, accelerate growth, and attract foreign direct investment thus contributing to job creation and poverty reduction.
