An Assessment of Challenges, Prospects, and Progress Towards the Successful Implementation of AfCFTA in the SADC Region

Abstract

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement ( AfCFTA) was established to promote intra-African trade through the creation of a single market for goods and services. AfCFTA is premised on furthering Agenda 2063 aspirations of enhancing the competitiveness of African economies in global trade. However, in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), there has been limited trade between member states given the production and export of similar base metals, ores, precious metals, agriculture, and fishing-related goods, and most SADC exports are mainly destined to South Africa. It remains unclear if there may be mutually beneficial trade for SADC members who are AfCFTA members amidst a myriad of economic, social, political, and institutional challenges and limited trade amongst themselves. However, there are prospects that AfCFTA promises in the form of better and new products, and wider markets as well as employment opportunities for the youths. Also, SADC members have complied with AfCFTA domestic requirements but the gains from trading are yet to be established as trading only began in 2021 under AfCFTA provisions.
