Climate Smart Agriculture: Panacea for FoodInsecurity Challenge in Zimbabwe? Quick Lessons from Practical Application of Pfumvudza Model

Abstract

Food and nutrition security remain top priorities across governments in Africa considering the growing population, climate change, geopolitical and public health threats. The need to enhance productivity for smallholder farmers is increasingly becoming critical given that bulk of total grain produced in Africa is from smallholder farmers. Climate Smart Agriculture is therefore an imperative and Pfumvudza is one such approach developed by Foundations for Farming to promote food security at household level. The concept is currently being promoted in Zimbabwe and Higherlife Foundation embarked on a drive to contribute towards rural transformation and sustainable livelihoods through training and establishment of 2484 Pfumvudza plots during the 2020/21 season. This paper unpacks key practical lessons learnt and proffer policy level recommendations towards enhancing food self-sufficiency for Zimbabwe in line with National Development Strategy 1, Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
