Information and Communication Technologies’ Role in Tourism Competitiveness and Initiatives of Some African Countries

Abstract

Africa’s performance in global tourism competitiveness is weak as compared to other continents; there is a need to develop appropriate strategies to upsurge the continent sector’s performance. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have affected the global tourism in profound ways. This means that Africa should adapt to this new trend to gain a larger global market share in tourism trade. This paper aims to highlight the role that ICT plays in tourism, specifically in transport, lodging, tour operators and travel agency services. It further explores some of the tourism ICT initiatives implemented in Africa where case studies of Egypt, Mauritius and Kenya developments in this area are presented. It could be identified from these case studies that to some degree, Africa has also taken steps to utilise ICT in support of tourism development. Finally, the study provides recommendations that African governments decision-makers, the tourism business community as well as the academia can employ to promote tourism through the usage of ICT.
