Levelling the Playing Field for Remittance Providers in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

Remittances are a critical source of capital for individuals around the world to help manage liquidity, recover from financial shocks and meet goals such as paying school fees or building a home. This article explores some of the emerging findings from Cenfri and Financial Sector Deepening Africa’s (FSDA) research on how the barriers in the remittance market in sub-Saharan Africa can be overcome to bring down the cost and increase the usage of formal remittance services. The research is based on a review of 32 remittance studies and qualitative interviews with 19 providers, experts and policymakers. It provides specific recommendations for providers, regulators and the development community.
