Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the comparative results obtained from total mesorectum excision done laparoscopic vs. robotic. In my paper I analyze all the patients diagnosed with rectal cancer through a period of 7 years between 2008 and 2014 at Fundeni Cinical Institute and who were operated using either laparoscopic or robotic surgery. The data used was obtained from clinical observation sheets, operative protocols and histopathological examination results. Postoperative monitoring was done at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after surgery, and after that yearly checkups. The main conclusions of the analysis were: Robotic surgery can be used in the same interventions as conventional laparoscopy, but with more advanced technology; Anal sphincter saving surgical interventions were performed more frequently in patients operated robotically; Duration of surgery is higher in patients operated robotically, but decreased with increased experience; Conversion to open surgery is more common in cases operated by conventional laparoscopy; The postoperative results were better in patients operated robotically; The main advantages of robotic surgery are better oncologic outcomes and a higher quality of life; Robotic surgery may become the gold standard in the surgical treatment of rectal cancer.
