Emigration to South Africa's Mines

Abstract

Temporary migration from five countries to South Africa's mines is examined; Both determinants of migration and economic consequences are investigated econometrically, during 1946-78. Emigration is shown to (1) diminish crop production in the short-run; (2) enhance crop productivity and cattle accumulation through invested remittances in the long-run; and (3) escalate plantation wages. Conflicting interests exist between local employers and the mines. Forms of state intervention adopted and discussed include forced labor, emigration quotas, and compulsory population relocation.
