Interregional Inequalities, Convergence, and Growth in France from 1840 to 1911

Abstract

The French tax of the patentes hits non agricultural enterprises in proportion of their expected profitability. We thus use the available statistics about this tax so as to assess the GDP per French department from 1840 to 1910. We give evidence of the accuracy of the device, comparing our figures with those calculated by Toutain for 1860. We then use the data to test inter-département's inequalities and convergence over the period. The inquiry comes up with a robust catching up effect, especially for non-agricultural activities. Further analyses show that ruralurban migration turns out critical to explain the phenomenon.
