Abstract

Anaemia can be broadly classified into decreased erythrocyte production (ineffective erythropoiesis) as a result of impaired proliferation of red-cell precursors or ineffective maturation of erythrocytes; or increased loss of erythrocytes through increased destruction (haemolysis) or blood loss; or both. These processes are broadly determined by nutrition, infectious disease, and genetics [1]. Although iron deficiency is thought to be the major cause of anaemia, postulated to account for around 50% of anaemia, there is little evidence to support such estimates [2].
