A Neutrophil’s Perspective: the Innate Response to Tuberculosis Infection and the Induction of Adaptive Immunity

Abstract

Neutrophils were traditionally viewed as short lived, terminal, innate effector cells that eliminate microbes and remove cellular debris at the site of infection or inflammation. They mediate this by phagocytosis, the release of reactive oxygen species, antimicrobial proteins and proteolytic enzymes. During recent years, studies have demonstrated that they are longer lived than initially thought and they mediate a large number of immune functions by the release of a variety of preformed and newly synthesized molecules such as cytokines and chemokines.
