Abstract

Since changes in public debt are indicators of the sustainability of public finances, it is important to monitor the effects of changes on the economy. The study analyzes the impact of public debt on economic growth in Türkiye. The relationship between the share of public debt in gross domestic product and real gross domestic product is examined using the OLS method and it is found that changes in public debt stock have a negative effect on gross domestic product. The findings imply to decision-makers that if borrowed funds are used correctly, they could have a positive contribution to economic growth.
