An Evaluation on the Application of the Liberal International Trade Policies Ottoman Empire in Its Last Century

Abstract

In this article, the foreign trade policies, implemented by the Ottoman State in the 19th century, are re-evaluated in comparison with the policies implemented by countries in the world. The research is based on the historical case study analysis. This article demonstrates that no country, not even the U.K., has reduced the tariffs to the level applied by the Ottoman State. The foreign trade policies of the Ottoman State, which were used as a means of expansion from the foundation years, have become policies that harm the balance of payments and the economy in the last period.
