Abstract

Economic development has been the focus of many studies in Islamic economics. While these studies have rightly brought out the holistic nature of the concept of development in Islamic perspective, they also suggest a change in the present strategies of development. The present paper takes a critical view of this literature and points out that this approach neglects certain historical characteristics of development process, which need to be integrated in an Islamic approach. The paper suggests that there is no inherent conflict between the values prescribed and propagated by Islam and the values required for economic growth and development. The reasons for the dismal performance of Muslim countries in the field of economic development must be sought elsewhere and particularly in poor management of development activity. Instead of advocating an Islamic strategy of development, integration of Islamic institutions into a development strategy is pleaded.
