Abstract

Until recently, there has been no internationally comparable data source to capture sector-wise financial surplus or deficit in India. By utilizing a newly launched version of the National Accounts Statistics, an overview of the macro economy and sector-wise financial flows in India are visually illustrated, through comparison with China. Furthermore, to see the background to the lack of adequate infrastructure, two issues related to financial flows are investigated: gold demand and banking regulations. As an example of the contribution of foreign financial institutions to the Indian economy, the current situation of and challenges faced by Japanese Banks are described.
